  2. 5TH OCTOBER 1910 Up to this date, we had a monarchy ruling us. On 5th October 1910, there was a popular insurrection in which the king and his family were murdered in a Lisbon street.

  3. As a consequence of this, there was a shift in the political governing system. From then on, a republic was implemented up to nowadays.

  4. 1ST NOVEMBER It is a religious catholic holiday. All people celebrate their dead relatives. They decorate the graveyards with flowers and candles.

  5. 1ST DECEMBER 1640 We were dominated by three Spanish kings for 60 years and in this date there was a rebellion to expel them from Portugal. Thus we restored our independence.

  6. 25th December • This is a Christian holiday on which we celebrate Christ’s birth. • This is a very important day and all the families meet together.

  7. On 25th December’s eve, we eat a special menu, consisting of boiled cod, octopus, potatoes and cabbage. For dessert, there are always many traditional cakes, biscuits, candies and puddings.

  8. Our homes, streets and shops are beautifully decorated weeks before this date. At midnight we offer gifts in the name of Jesus or, more recently, of Santa Claus.

  9. 25th APRIL 1974 For about 50 years , we have lived under a dictactorship: fascism. But on 25th April 1974, there was a revolution led by the MFA (Movement of the Armed Forces).

  10. It became known as The Carnation Revolution, because a flower saleswoman began distributing red carnations to the crowd in the streets of Lisbon and many soldiers put one in the their guns’ top. Thus it was a bloodless revolution. From this date on, we have been living under a democracy.

  11. EASTER It’s a religious holiday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus with a lot of masses and processions all over the country. At lunch, we usually eat lamb, roasted potatoes and a big variety of cakes and puddings.

  12. CARNIVAL It’s always celebrated on a Tuesday, depending on Easter day. Most towns and cities organise amusing demonstrations in which lots of people wear masks and criticize some politicians’ measures.

  13. 1st MAY Being the worker’s holiday, it’s commemorated in many countries all over the world.

  14. 10TH JUNE It’s Camões and the Portuguese Communities’ holiday. Camões was a Portuguese 16th - century-poet . On this day we also celebrate the Portuguese maritime discoveries along the second half of the 15th century and throughoutthe 16th one.

  15. During this time, financially supported by the royalty, well-equipped caravans set away from Lisbon to far-away, unknown lands. Courageous sailors discovered two archipelagoes, Azores and Madeira, Brazil, India, Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, S. Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné-Bissau, Timor and Macau.

  16. On 10th June, we also commemorate the fact that along the 60’s, thousands of emigrants left our country either for political or economic reasons.
