  4. Daylighting • Skylight w/ louvers • Controls incoming light • Prevents glare, heat gain • Uses light sensors • Manual override • Reflector • Distributes light evenly • Houses electric lights • Bottom Line: No electric light necessary during daylight hours

Heating and Cooling • Super-insulated • Heat-exchange ventilation • Outgoing air swaps heat with incoming fresh air • Passive cooling • Cement floor & walls slow transfer of heat • Cooled overnight by opening louver doors • Walls & floor absorb heat on warm days • Ceiling fans increase comfort

  6. Indoor Environment • Superior Acoustics: • Sound-proof practice rooms • Sound-muting curtains in main classroom to improve acoustics • Air Quality • Low V.O.C. materials • Ample fresh air • Local & recycled building materials

  7. Stormwater Management • New landscaped courtyard • Planted areas will manage stormwater • Runoff will be routed into raingarden

  8. Solar power & net-zero energy • 153 solar shingles on south roof • Will produce ~5000 kWh per year • Coupled with energy efficient technology and behavior, solar panels could produce as much energy as building consumes Energy Produced=Energy Consumed Net-zero energy consumption

  9. Using Your New Building • Big Idea: Conservation and comfort • How? • Open louver doors when appropriate (indicator light will tell you when) • Keep building sealed otherwise (no doors propped open) • Limit electric appliances • Turn things off when not in use
