National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada December 6, 2012 A day to: • Remember the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal • Reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women • Take concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women

  4. Resources for Stewards • Chocolate Roses • Webcards with information links • A poster for worksite bulletin boards • A PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes

  5. Expectations for the day • Engage with members and raise awareness about the day through at least one activity, such as: • A walkabout • An information table • A presentation for a JOHSC • A presentation for staff (lunch & learn)

Example Activities from 2011 Stewards: • Presented information on violence in the workplace • Held a poinsettia raffle fundraiser for a women’s shelter • Organized walkabouts and drop-in sessions to promote conversations and raise awareness. “Stewards said it was a very positive event because it gave people a chance to remember and talk about how they felt or where they were 22 years ago. Definitely created awareness”.

  7. Anti-bullying Day February 27, 2013 A day to: • Promote awareness about bullying • Provide information on what to do if experiencing or witnessing bullying

  8. Resources for Stewards • Pink pens • A PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes • A bulletin board display with kit • TBD – Initiative in collaboration with the BCNU Education Department

  9. Expectations for the day • Engage with members and raise awareness about the day through at least one activity, such as: • Walkabouts • Information tables • Presentations to JOHSCs • Lunch and learns etc. • Make a bulletin board display with kit provided

  10. Example Activities from 2012 Stewards: • Organized unit wide “pink events” with units wearing pink shirts and clothing • Held drop-ins and walkabouts with pink cake, pink cookie wafers, and pink bubble gum! • Gave presentations on codes and workplace violence

  11. International Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Awareness Day February 28, 2013 A day to highlight: • the causes of RSI • the need to eliminate those causes • the importance of fair compensation for workers disabled by RSI.

  12. Resources for Stewards • Webcardswith information links • An online discomfort survey with draw prizes • A PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes

Expectations for the day • Engage members and raise awareness about the day/issue with at least one activity, such as: • Walkabouts • Information tables • Presentations to JOHSCs • Lunch and learns etc. • Promote the online discomfort survey on BCNU website • Follow up on worksite concerns identified in the survey

  14. Example Activities from 2012 Stewards: • Arranged for an ergonomist to conduct workstation assessments and give a presentation • Demonstrated a stretch routine to start a regional meeting

  15. International Day of Mourning April 28, 2013 A day to: • Raise awareness about the Day of Mourning • Share information about workplace injuries/illness in BC Healthcare

  16. Resources for Stewards • A fact sheet on workplace injuries/illness in healthcare • Links to resources from WorkSafeBC: • Poster • Stickers • Online memorial • Webcast of Vancouver Ceremony • Listing of community events

  17. Expectations for the day • Engage members and raise awareness about the day/issue, such as: • Connect with your JOHSC about the day • Post the community events from WorkSafeBC website • Order posters and stickers from WorkSafeBC and use at worksite

  18. Example Activities from 2012 Stewards: • Attended local ceremonies • Posted information about local ceremonies

  19. Safety and Health Week May 5 - 11, 2013 Safety and Health Week launched in 1997 to focus employers, employees, partners and the public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community • BCNU Theme for the Week: • TBD

  20. Resources for Stewards Options (TBD) include: • A PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes • An online activity with prizes • A giveaway TBD • A poster or bulletin board kit

  21. Expectations for the Week • Engage with members and raise awareness about the day/issue, such as: • A walkabout • An information table • A presentation for a JOHSC • A presentation for staff (lunch & learn)

  22. Example Activities from 2012 Stewards and Joint OH&S Committees: • Created a safety booth with site specific resources • Distributed cards with incident reporting and call center information on it • Conducted a safety inspection with a violence prevention focus
