  2. What Is Celiac Disease? How Does It Occur In The Body? Celiac Disease is: A Digestive Disease that damages your small intestine. When this happens, the person cannot have anything containing gluten [A protein in wheat, rye & barley]. * If gluten is ingested, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying Villi. Villi allows nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. If you have damaged Villi, then all the nutrients in the food you eat will not be used and you will become malnourished, no matter how much food you take in.

  4. Causes of this Illness • Celiac Disease is genetic, so it can run in the family, and pass to you. • It can be triggered also after: - Having Surgery - Being Pregnant - After Childbirth - Through Viral Infections or.. - When Having Severe Emotional Stress

  5. Prevention of Celiac Disease • There is no way to prevent Celiac disease • Symptoms can be prevented • Eating gluten-free foods

  6. Who is Most at Risk? • Family members of those with the disease • The chances vary based on family history • However, the severity of the disease does not vary by family

Food & Diet That Can Harm or Help With Celiac Disease Foods To Avoid When You Have Celiac: - Wheat, Rye and Barley : Pretty much any grain, pasta or cereal are strictly off limits - Oats aren’t very good to eat, although studies show a bit of oats is okay - Going to restaurants can be a challenge, ask the chef if they have a gluten free menu - Watch when wanting to eat pizza, the crust needs to be gluten free Food’s That Are Safe To Eat: - Gluten Free Wheat products are available Ex: Instead of having Wheat Flour, you can buy potato, rice, quinoa, or bean Flour - There is also Gluten Free Bread and Pasta’s - Plain meat, fish, rice, fruits, and vegetables do not contain gluten Gluten can also be in some medications, and can be in unusual stuff like play dough and lipstick so be careful
