  1. Mousetrap game assignment Rube Goldberg example

  2. Steps (stages) • The operation of the machine involves, many transformations and transfers of energy. • Each transfer of energy between objects indicates a step • Steps can include transformation of energy within them

  3. Your assignment • List each major transfer and transformation of energy that occurs during the operation of the mousetrap machine • You will hand in a copy of the lists. • Counts towards your grade on the final project (Rube)

  4. Transfer list • For each transfer of energy , indicate: 1) Step Number 2) Short description of primary action 2) Which part/object gains energy in the step 3) Which part/object loses it in the step

  5. Transformation list • For each transformation, indicate: 1) The step the transformation occurred 2) Object(s) involved 3) Action that occurs during transformation 4) The major initial and final form of energy

  6. Things to consider • Ignore minor forces or amounts of energy Like air resistance, but friction may be significant in different steps • There can be several transformations occurring in one step • There can be a transformation of energy as it is transferred.

  7. Example of Transfer • First step • Action is your hand turning the Green Crank • You (through your hand) lose energy • Green Crank gains energy

  8. Example of Transformation Step ______ Green Boot swinging upward KE to GPE
