Igneous Rocks : • Igneous rocks are crystalline solids which form directly from the cooling of magma. • The earth is made of igneous rock. • Igneous rocks are given names based upon two things: composition (what they are made of) and texture (how big the crystals are).
Examples of Igneous rocks: 1. Obsidian is a dark-colored volcanic glass that forms from the very rapid cooling of molten rock material.
2. Diorite is a coarse-grained, intrusive igneous rock that contains a mixture of feldspar, pyroxene, hornblende and sometimes quartz.
3. Pumice is a light-colored vesicular igneous rock It forms through very rapid solidification of a melt. The vesicular texture is a result of gas trapped in the melt at the time of solidification.
Sedimentary Rocks : • Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment. • formed in three main ways: by the deposition, of the weathered , deposition of the results of biogenic activity; and by precipitation from solution.
Examples of Sedimentary rocks: 1. Breccia is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of large (over two millimeter diameter) angular fragments.
2. Chert is a microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline sedimentary rock material composed of silicon dioxide.
3. Rock Salt is a chemical sedimentary rock that forms from the evaporation of ocean or saline lake waters. It is also known by the mineral name "halite".
Metamorphic : • Metamorphic rocks are formed under the earth. • The metamorphic get their name from "meta" (change) and "morph" (form). • Metamorphic Rocks are sedimentary or igneous rocks that have been changed by heat and/or pressure.
Examples of Metamorphic rocks rocks: • Quartzite is a coarse-grained metamorphic rock derived from sandstone.
2. Amphibolite is a non-foliated metamorphic rock that forms through recrystallization under conditions of high viscosity and directed pressure.
3. Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock that is produced from the metamorphism of limestone. It is composed primarily of calcium carbonate.
