Join us on March 24, 2012, from 12 PM to 4 PM at Chand Palace, 269 Littleton Road, Parsippany, NJ. A marrow/stem cell transplant is vital for many leukemia patients, yet minority patients face significant hurdles in finding matches. Register to be a donor if you're healthy and between 18-60. Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their racial and ethnic background. A minority patient has 20-25 % less chance of finding a match on the registry than a Caucasian patient, which is a tremendous disadvantage for the patient Out of 9 million donors only 160,000 are of South Asian origin. 70% of patients do not have a matched donor in their family. What to Do All healthy individuals between the ages of 18 – 60 can register to be marrow/stem cell donors. Initially a donor consent form is completed along with a cheek swab sample. If you match, marrow is collected from your blood through a process called apheresis. Your body will naturally replace the marrow/stem cells in a few weeks. Volunteer by organizing and conducting marrow registry drives. Call SAMAR 718-592-0821 732.670.4947/ www.AnkushNeedsYou.com
