The Catechism • What is it? A book of instruction in the form of questions and answers. • Who wrote it? Martin Luther (1483-1546) • Why was it written? So that the head of the family could teach his family.
What’s in it? • Ten Commandments • Apostles’ Creed • Lord’s Prayer • Sacrament of Holy Baptism • Confession and Office of the Keys • Sacrament of Holy Communion
Words to Know • Prophet – one who speaks God’s Word to God’s People • Evangelist – one who speaks or writes the Good News about Jesus • Apostle-One who is sent out as Jesus’ messenger • Bible – Book • Scriptures – “The Writings” referring to the Bible.
What is The Bible? • God the Holy Spirit breathed into (INSPIRED) the writers to write the exact words He wanted. • The Bible is therefore word-for-word God’s Word. • Everything in The Bible is true since it’s God’s Word. • We shouldn’t add or subtract anything from the Bible.
Why did God give us The Bible? • To teach us the way of salvation (deliverance) by trusting in Jesus. • To guide us in God-pleasing living after we have come to trust in Jesus as our Saviour.
How does God want us to use His Word? • To hear and study it gladly. • To live according to it. • Through it, he will strengthen us in our Christian faith and life.
