  2. Good Practices exchange and EMIP Evidence based Good Practices on injury prevention! Information on ‘What works in injury prevention’ is needed to: • Develop effective interventions Database on Effective Measures in Injury Prevention (EMIP) • Accessible through EuroSafe website (www.eurosafe.eu.com) Working together to make Europe a safer place

Aim and objective of EMIP Aim: • To formulate and disseminate evidence statements for specific interventions to prevent intentional and unintentional injuries to encourage evidence based practice in injury prevention. Objective: • To describe, store and provide access to information on ‘what works or is believed to work in injury prevention’, in the form of formulating evidence statements for specific interventions and supporting documentation. Based on literature and/or expert consensus. Working together to make Europe a safer place

  4. Target group of EMIP Those who need info about effective preventive measures • Researchers • Public health professionals • Policy makers • Excludes consumers Working together to make Europe a safer place

Good Practices exchange a priority Communication of the Commission (June 2006) stated: • Health care sector should take care of dissemination of evidence based strategies in injury prevention Recommendation of the Council (May 2007) invites MS’s to: • Make better use of existing information • Monitor the effects of prevention measures Specific role for Commission in: • Ensuring exchange of information on Good Practices EMIP makes an effort to implement these recommendations! Range of conclusions on effectiveness within EMIP • Convincing evidence for effectiveness • Strong indications for effectiveness • Indications for effectiveness • No indications for effectiveness • Evidence shows that measure is not effective • Conflicting evidence found to make an evidence statement • No/inconclusive evidence found to make an evidence statement Examples of interventions and effectiveness in EMIP: • Strong indications for effectiveness: Perform a warming up to reduce the risk and/or occurrence of sports injuries • Convincing evidence effectiveness: Interventions promoting the use of bicycle helmets • Indications for effectiveness: Home intervention and the reduction of falls in high risk elderly Working together to make Europe a safer place

Maximum gains - limited resources Existing information • Existing (systematic) reviews in literature • Websites including evidence statements and/or overviews of systematic reviews • Previous projects including evidence statements ‘New’ information • Links to existing projects • New literature research conducted especially for EMIP • Expert consensus Working together to make Europe a safer place

Way forward on Good Practices exchange • Use existing information for priority setting and policy making • Capacity building within Member State countries is needed • Use dedicated networks for Good Practices exchange • Measure, report and exchange effectiveness of interventions • Build sustainable tools for exchange of Good Practices Working together to make Europe a safer place
