Review of Major Recovery Act Initiatives • Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Large Blade Testing Facility ($25M) • Clemson University Large Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility ($45M) • 27 R&D Projects ranging from blade composite design and novel drivetrains to wind grid integration and energy storage ($14M) • Seven Hydroelectric Modernization projects ($30M) including private industry and municipals • Three University R&D Consortia projects ($23M)
Massachusetts Clean Energy Center – Large Blade Testing Facility • Photo shows facility as of January 2011 • Facility can test blades up to 90m in length (current testing length at NREL is 40m)

New Initiatives and Status of Funding in FY11 • Status of Funding in FY11 Budget Request: • $123M for Wind including Technology Viability, Technology Application, Technology Acceptance, and Offshore Wind • $40M for Water including Conventional Hydropower and MHK • Offshore Wind Initiative ($50M) • Strategic Plan • Three Funding Opportunity Announcements • Technology Development • Market Acceptance • Next Generation Drive train • MOUs with DOI and NOAA • Conventional Hydropower Initiative ($9M) • Funding Opportunity Announcement • Upgrade feasibility project with ORNL • MOU with NOAA
Budget Request for FY12 • Presidential Budget Request for Wind is $126,859,000 • Presidential Budget Request for Water is $38,500,000 • Wind and Water budget has grown significantly from FY08 • FY08 Wind Budget: $49.5M • FY08 Water Budget: $10M • Two new bills could increase MHK and CH funding • Increased Funding will be used for: • New Initiatives (Offshore Wind, MHK, Conventional Hydropower) • Continued R&D which is needed for: • Blades – Lighter blades and improved manufacturing processes for longer blades • Drive trains – Addressing durability issues.
