  3. 1)You will work in four groups and give a presentation of a role play which demonstrates the important role which coaches play in athletes behavior in sport. 2)You will also need to complete outlines of the studies you have been assigned on the google doc that has been shared with you The task….

  4. Group 1 The role play: • Read Pearson p. 300 – 301. Demonstrate (using role play) the interaction between motivation and coaching styles. • Make sure you focus on mastery /task-oriented motivational climate & skills needed to develop this The Studies: • Complete aims, procedures and conclusions on shared googledoc • Fraser-Thomas et al. (2008) swimmers who dropped out or continued their sport • Keegan et al. (2009) effects of coach behavior on young athletes Interactions between coaching style and motivation

  5. Group 2 The role play: • Read p.132 of Hannibal and explain Horn and Lox’s (1993) 4 step expectancy theory in sport using role play for each step. The study: • Explain how Chase et al. (1997) (include aim, procedures and conclusions) relates to the self-fulfilling prophecy • Put this on the google doc Why do coaches’ beliefs affect athlete’s perceptions and behavior?

  6. Group 3 The role play: • Demonstrate through role play Weinberg and Gould’s (2007) coaching behavior categories (p.132 Hannibal). The Study: • Explain Solomon et al.’s (1996) findings and how this might affect player behavior. Put this on a slide on the google doc The influence of coaches Behavior

  7. Group 4 The role play: Alfermann et al. (2005) p.123 – 133 Hannibal. • Explain the aim • Demonstrate the procedure – use the whole class as participants • Explain the results The Study: • Outline the above studies 1 & 2 (include aim, procedures and conclusions) in the shared google doc Coaches influence on skill development

  8. Homework for next lesson • Create a flow chart that shows the relationship between coaches’ expectations, feedback, skill development and motivation. • Use p. 324 – 325 Crane and the shared google doc as a reference. • You will be sharing these with the rest of class next lesson Let it flow…
