Newton’s First and Second Laws. Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class. Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion. States that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside, unbalanced force. Also called the law of inertia. Inertia.

  2. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion • States that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside, unbalanced force. • Also called the law of inertia

  3. Inertia • An object’s resistance to change in motion • Amount of inertia an object has depends on it’s mass. The greater the mass the greater the inertia

  4. Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion • States that acceleration depends on an objects mass and the net force acting on an object. • Acceleration= net force/ mass

  5. Acceleration • Acceleration increases if force increases. • Acceleration will increase if mass decreases
