  2. History of Tattoos • The word tattoo is said to have come from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means “striking something” and the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something’

  3. Geographic distribution • Tattooing is massively diverse • Northern Europe/ Celts • Egypt • Thailand • Japan • Pazyryk • India • Greece

  4. Egypt • Mummies have been found as late back as the 4th dynasty with tattoos • Women ritualistic tattoos • Thought to be the origin

  5. Northern Europe • The tattoos shown to the right were found on a 5000 year old ice man in Northern Europe • There were over 57 tattoos found on his body

  6. Celts • Celtic culture was full of body art • Symbolize the connection of all life • Used the process called woading

  7. Thailand • Thais believe women do not need the extra boost as they are already strong enough on their own • Magical • Women are excluded because monks are not allowed to be touched by them

  8. Japan • Tattoos was decoration not magical • Classic Japanese tattoo is a full body tattoo

  9. Pazyryk • Mummies found that date back to around 2400 years ago • Tattoos of animals which depict magical significance and decorative elements
