  3. Mutual Edification

  4. Shared Ministry

  5. Mutual Edification “the scriptural preacher must be on the move and only preach (teach) to non-Christians. Therefore, a preacher who is located, supported, and preaches to a local church is unscriptural”

  6. Mutual Edification I Corinthians 3:5-9 – different ministers A paid preacher can only work with an unorganized church (Titus 1:5, I Tim. 5:22) A preacher cannot be paid to work with an organized congregation

  7. Mutual Edification Preach means to address non-Christians One cannot preach to Christians Gospel Teach means to address Christians One cannot teach non-Christians Doctrine

  8. Mutual Edification A congregation is edified internally Ephesians 4:14 The elders are charged with teaching I Peter 5:2

  9. Mutual Edification "Our preachers receive stipulated salaries which classes them as hirelings. They take gifts from the churches which is a direct violation of a Biblical principle, this pounding puts the preacher under obligation to the church and the salary seals his lips and perverts his words“ Leroy Garrett

  10. Mutual Edification It is wrong to pay preachers It is wrong for a preacher to work with elders An evangelist duty is to oversee the church in the absence of elders An evangelist cannot locate with a church No NT example of a located preacher

  11. Is There Authority? What is the Scriptural image of a preacher? Do we have authority for elders & preachers? Do we have authority for paid preachers?

  12. The Office of a Preacher A Preacher – Romans 10:14 An Evangelist – Acts 21:8 A Minister – I Thessalonians 3:2 II Timothy 4:1-4 “preach the word….do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry”

  13. The Office of a Preacher Lessons from Timothy Timothy preached with Elders present Acts 20:17 Timothy taught doctrine AND Gospel II Timothy 4:1-4

  17. Can a Preacher be Paid? 1 Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain," and, "The laborer is worthy of his wages.“ 1 Corinthians 9:1-16

  18. The Error of M.E.? Jesus gave evangelists to the local church Ephesians 4:11-12 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

  19. The Error of M.E.? Jesus gave evangelists to the local church Not everyone should be a teacher James 3:1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. I Corinthians 12:1-20

  20. The Error of M.E.? Jesus gave evangelists to the local church Not everyone should be a teacher ME has led to liberal digression Carl Ketcherside, Leroy Garrett, congregations in Oregon, etc

  21. Dangers We Need to See Seeing permission as necessity Viewing the preacher as a hireling Not purposing to edify the church

  22. Seeing Permission as Necessity A preached need not be paid – Acts 18:3 Elders/deacons can be paid – I Tim. 5:18 We have authority for multiple preachers Acts 13:1 Elders can do the work of a preacher I Tim. 5:17

  23. Viewing the Preacher as a Hireling A preacher is a member of the church A LOCAL work, always FULL TIME Paying the preacher does not mean: He is hired or fired His is a QUALIFIED OFFICE II Timothy 2:19-23

  24. Failing to Edify Ourselves Viewing the preacher as all evangelism The Preacher/Elders purpose: Ephesians 4:12a for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry…..
