  2. Purpose • To honor, respect and memorialize those who have sacrificed and currently sacrifice their lives to protect our freedom while serving in our Armed forces. • To examine what WE can do to uphold American ideals of democracy, liberty, and justice in our own lives, and in our own ways.

  4. Expressions of Freedom Project Your challenge is to respond to the following question: “What would someone of your generation say or do to honor and recognize American veterans?”

  5. Project Guidelines Your project can be in one of the following categories: • Literature • Film Production • Musical Composition • Photography • Visual Arts

  7. Literature What is a Veteran? By Lynn C. Price, 2008 • “Nana, what’s a Veteran?Is it true they’re boys and girls?Can they really fly like eagles?Do they live in different worlds?” • I looked down on my angel,So wise beyond six years;Brown eyes wide open in innocence,Still free from ‘grown up’ fears. • Hand in hand we wandered,Through scrapbooks old with age,Her tiny fingers tracingThe photos on every page. I told her many stories,How her family tree is blessed,With courageous men and women,Who proudly gave their best.   15. Project Guidelines • Your project MUST be yours, and yours alone! • You must submit an entry form that is COMPLETED and accompanying your project.

  16. Based on your project you may be chosen as an ambassador on the freedom flight

  17. Ambassadors have a special role • They will learn first-hand the responsibilities of Americans to listen to and tell stories of service and sacrifice. • They will get to know and interview a WWII veteran while accompanying them to the WWII memorial in Washington DC. • They will be held to the highest degree of expectations in behavior; to show utmost respect, to listen with the intent to understand, and to help in any way possible make the common experience of the veterans and students aboard a positive one. • They will attend training the week before the flight to prepare. • They will be exposed for cameras and media. • They will be interviewed on camera. • They will return from the trip and tell their stories and experiences to students and faculty at their own campuses.

  18. If you are not chosen as an ambassador there are Still many ways to stay involved! • The Celebration Evening- May 9th • The send off crew • The welcome home crew EVERYONE is NEEDED!!

  21. Steps: • Get the Guidelines and Entry Forms from your teacher, OR online on the Social Studies Department page of the GCISD website. • Begin working on your project! • Make sure it is turned in NO LATER than 3:30 on April 22nd
