Do Now!!! • When designing an airplane, what do you think are the most important factors you need to consider to make the airplane fly? List AS MANY things as you can!!! • (examples: mass of the cargo; size of the plane, etc.)
Announcements • Please be on task today • Field Trip • Next week: Newton’s Laws
Introduction • Have you ever wondered how airplanes fly? What makes them glide through the air so effortlessly? During this project you will be creating glider to transport someone home safely. Meet Mr. B. A. Nana.
Your task: • Mr. B.A. Nana is a very important executive in the peeled fruit industry here in Charlotte. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to ever book a flight out of town!!!! Mr. Nana has decided to charter a private flight with your aerodynamics firm. You must create a custom plane of materials available to you for Mr. Nana in less than 30 minutes.
The Rules • You may only use the materials in your box. If you break or misuse an item, you are out of luck. • Banana Rights Issues: In order to ride in the glider Mr. Nana may not be glued, cut, taped, punctured or damaged in any way deemed inhumane. He may not be peeled. • He may wear a seatbelt. He may sit in a custom seat. He may rest in any position.
Your materials • A 1” slice of banana • Fishing wire • Card stock • 2 sheets plain paper • 10” clear tape • Scissors • Glue Stick • 2 popsicle sticks • 3 paper clips
Procedure Your glider will be judged on four criteria: • Time in flight • Distance from the release point • Condition of Mr. Nana after the flight. • 1 point for major damage, • 2 points for some damage • 3 points for no/slight damage • Group Participation and Attitude
Tips for Success!!! • Do NOT get out of your seat without permission. This will make your team lose points. • Keep voices to a minimum. • Be careful not to smash the banana. You should not attach Mr. Nana until the final moments before you are taking your recorded flight. • There are no limitations to size or weight, only the materials you use. • Using extra materials results in a disqualification. • An alternate activity will be provided to those that can not focus or be productive.
