Enhancing Trail Data Standards: Interagency Collaboration for Improved Communication and Efficiency

This document outlines the ongoing development of trail data standards by various interagency partners, including the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Initiated at the 2001 Spatial Odyssey GIS Conference, the initiative focuses on improving internal and external customer communication and efficiency through the implementation of the Interagency Trail Data Standard (ITDS). The project aims to create standardized terminology and attributes for managing trail data, ensuring accessible and reliable data for the National Trail System.

FGDC Data Standard Inclusive of ITDS, NPS, and others: Partnership of FGDC, NPS, and NCSU • The FGDC-supported Trail Data Standard will provide, in two separate parts: data content and data transfer standards for trails of all kinds: • Initially had Data QA/QC component but removed based on comments • Data Content provides semantic definitions of a set of objects. This part specifies and defines the data elements associated with trails. • Data Transfer describes how to produce or consume packages of data, independent of technology and applications that will facilitate moving data between agencies and systems.
