Current network operations • 2 NRENs connected directly to Amsterdam • TENET – 1x STM-64 • KENET-1 x STM-4 + 1 x STM-4 (temporary, to be replaced with 1 x STM-16) • 2 NRENs connected to PoPs in Africa • RENU, connected to Kampala PoP, 2xSTM-1 • ZAMREN, connected to TENET, 350Mbps • 1 Light Path • Between HartRAO and JIVE – used to transfer of e-VLBI data from the observatory in HartRAO to JIVE , Netherlands. • Peering with GEANT in London and Amsterdam • Peering and transit at LINX and AMS-IX

Current network operations • 2 PoPs in Europe • London and Amsterdam • 6 PoPs in Africa (new, under AfricaConnect) • Mtunzini, Maputo, Dar es salaam, Nairobi, Kampala Kigali • 1 STM-4 Link from Nairobi PoP to Europe • 2 NRENs connected directly to Amsterdam • TENET – 1 x 10GbE • KENET – 1 x STM-4 • 4 NRENs connected directly to London • KENET – 2 x STM-4, 1 x STM-1 • SudREN – 1 x STM-1 • TENET – 1 x 10GbE • MoRENet – 1 x STM-1 • 1 NRENs connected to South Africa • ZAMREN – 350Mbps via TENET

Africaconnect – Keeping African traffic local • Project to Implement UbuntuNet(the network) • Interconnect NREN networks within the Alliance region • Ensure African traffic is exchanged within Africa • Connect to GÉANT and rest of REN community through UbuntuNet PoPs in Europe • Budget -€14.75 M for 4 years. • 80% provided by EC • 20% by Alliance NRENs • Aims to; • Foster the development of cooperative research programmes between European and African research and education communities; • Open up the research activities in the region and build co-operation with researchers in the rest of the world; • Support NREN staff capacity building

AfricaConnect - progress • Implementation will be done in phases • Phase one: • Backbone linking PoPs in ZA,MZ,TZ,KE,UGand RW • Direct link KE<->ZA • Intercontinental link from Nairobi to Amsterdam • Upgrade London and Amsterdam PoPs • Implementation Complete, carrying traffic • Phase two: • Links to Zambia, DRCand possibly Malawi, • Procurement complete • Contract for Links to ZAMBIA, DRC awarded • Phases 3&4: • Ethiopia, Sudan, Namibia, Botswana • Redundant links – Kigali<> Dar es salaam, Lusaka<> Johannesburg • Links to other NRENs that will be ready by then

Capacity building initiatives • A partnership between Ubuntunet Alliance, NSRC, AfricaConnect and INASP • To Train Network Engineers • able to plan, implement and operate advanced data networks • incorporating: • Training workshops • Secondment of expert personnel from advanced NRENS to assist with specific phases of NREN network development • Attachment of Engineers from Alliance NRENs to Advanced NRENs • Scholarships to attend workshops- mainly to AfNOG

  14. Capacity building initiatives • Network startup Resource Center (NSRC): • Provide trainers for workshop events (NREN and campus level) • Provide training kits • Support for trainees to attend workshops • Direct Engineering Assistance for Universities • INASP: • Funding of training workshops organized by the Alliance in collaboration with NSRC and AfNOG • AfricaConnect • Funding of training workshops organized by the Alliance in collaboration with NSRC and AfNOG

  15. Capacity building initiatives • 40 network personnel trained since November 2012 • 33 on advanced routing techniques • 7 on various courses offered by AfNOG • 13 personnel at Training of Trainers event in Kigali in November 2013 • Those trained have organized 5 campus level events in their respective countries • 8 more events planned to take place before the end of 2014 • So far, one direct Engineering Assistance event carried out in Zambia • 4 planned for 2014, 2 in Uganda and 2 in Tanzania
