  1. Jamaica By Roseanna Hanrahan

  2. The 194,000 acre Blue Mountain and John Crow Mountain National Park was established in 1992 to preserve some of the remaining forests and to protect the island’s largest watershed. The park comprises about 6% of Jamaica’s total land mass. These diverse mountain forests have more than 800 species of endemic plants, the world’s second largest butterfly, homerus, 200 species of resident and migrant birds and is one of the largest migratory bird habitats in the Caribbean. There are also more than 500 species of flowering plants of which almost one half are native to Jamaica. Of these, the most interesting is perhaps the Jamaican bamboo, Chusqueaabietifolia, that flowers only once every 33 years. The next flowering will take place in 2017. Jamaica’s mountain range forms one east to west chain rising with peaks that kiss the clouds and rise to a cap of over 7,400 ft. with rivers twisting downward through verdant green valleys, winding their way to the Caribbean Sea. 3. The edge of the whirling hurricane crossed Kingston at 9:45 p.m.; for four roaring hours after that, it lashed the city's galvanized iron roofs and clapboard frame houses. Breadfruit, coconuts and avocados rained into the streets. In the harbor, six steamships were driven ashore. With the deafening winds came typical hurricane rains, 17 inches in a little more than five hours. It was the worst storm in Jamaica's wind-battered history. When the sun reappeared at noon the next day, 109 people were dead. Thousands of men, women, and children, their homes beaten to matchwood, moved into churches, schools, hospitals. Damage, including windblown, flooded sugar cane and bananas, reached an estimated $56 million. Power lines had been knocked down and railroad tracks uprooted. The historic old town of Port Royal had been all but obliterated; only six habitable dwellings were still standing. And 76 convicts were at large; the 130-m.p.h. hurricane had toppled a penitentiary wall. Jamaican hurricane

  5. Jamaican parents are by nature very strict. From early childhood they urge their children to excel academically and athletically, they also encourage them to be discerning in regards to the company they keep. Although Jamaican parents are very stern, there is also another side to them. They are usually fun loving and very involved in all phases of their children's lives .Unlike some cultures where parents tend to sever the connection with their children, once they have acquired their legal age. You are never too old to be scolded or be given advice. . • part of the Jamaican family life consists of siblings being taught togetherness and looking out for each other. Sometimes the children are taken care of by nannies or "helpers". This is a very enlightening experience because they develop a wealth of knowledge about life and other Jamaicans living in different parishes. The "helpers" tell them stories about Jamaican folklore, they teach them to cook and comb their hair. Families and helpers urge the children to be well groomed and organized at all times. A big part of Jamaican life is, that Jamaican girls and women enjoy having their hair done on a regular basis, and pay keen attention to their appearance. Jamaican life
