As a teacher I see my students as the next generation of decision makers. I must prepare them for the road ahead by developing lessons which encompass standards, foster higher level thinking skills, and provide opportunities for real investigation. I must access my student’s prior knowledge and connect their learning to the world around us. I must recognize that there are many pathways to learning and attend to each individual’s learning needs. Active learning is essential; students must become engaged and invested in their learning. No longer is the teacher the sole purveyor of information. The classroom is a learning community; the teacher it’s director. Students need a safe and stimulating environment that is managed equitably by their teacher. Expectations must be clearly communicated and objectives must be measurable. Assessment must be done in a myriad of ways. Authentic assessments, including self and peer evaluation, are how students can best demonstrate their understanding. I must work with my fellow teachers, administrators, parents and community to truly meet my student’s needs and work towards their continued success. This is how deep and lasting understanding can be achieved. I am a teacher and I must hold myself to the same high standards I set for my students.
