Context Business Interoperability Interfaces for public procurement in Europe (CEN WS/BII) Exists as a Workshop of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) workshop agreements among participants are key deliverables; following principles of transparency, openness, coherence and consensus Puts EU policies into action – focusing on unity within diversity latest developments such as European Directive on e-procurement Supports the single market in Europe – in a global marketplace lowering procurement costs involves national, regional and global considerations, e.g., goods, prices, procedures, law, regulations, taxes

Context (continued) Aims to make more efficient – facilitating harmonisation of – procurement with semantic interoperability as priority driver Encourages outreach to national, regional and international standards community re-inventing the wheel makes more – not necessarily better - wheels Fosters clarity about requirements – so they can be addressed division of challenges into possible re-usable common parts Provides building blocks for vendors, system integrators, service providers solutions needs to be built and building-blocks cut implementation costs
