Epithet. Griffin Rolander. What is it?. An epithet is an adjective describing a subject by naming an key characteristic of the subject. Example: “laughing happiness” Laughing describes the type of happiness "life-giving water” You can tell the water is very refreshing.

  2. What is it? • An epithet is an adjective describing a subject by naming an key characteristic of the subject. • Example: • “laughing happiness” • Laughing describes the type of happiness • "life-giving water” • You can tell the water is very refreshing

  3. Metaphorical epithets • A metaphorical epithet would be using an epithet as a metaphor, to almost personify the noun • “Lazy road” • “Smirking billboards"

  4. Transferred Epithet • A transferred Epithet is an adjective modifying a noun which it does not normally modify, but which makes figurative sense. • Example: “Restless night." The night was not restless, but the person who was awake through it was

  5. Uses • Epithets are often used in poetry • Also, occasionally in music • If used in writing, epithets will most likely be found in conclusions, to wrap up the idea of a noun being discussed • If used correctly, epithets can really stimulate the reader’s senses
