What is a conjugation? • A conjugation is used when we take a Verb (Action word) in its Infinitive form and change it to say who did the action. • Infinitive verbs are verbs that are not changed/do not have a “who” completing the action • In English, an infinitive is to read or to jump. Add “to” to any action word • In Italian, an infinitive has an –ARE, –ERE, or –IRE at the end of it. An example would be “Guardare” (to watch) • We will be exploring Regular –ARE verbs today • Some Italian verbs are irregular and are not conjugated in the pattern we will learn today • Verbs can also be irregular in English. An example is “to be” which is conjugated into I am, you are, he/she is, etc.

  4. Why do we need to conjugate? • We need to know WHO is completing the action • In English, we add pronouns: I jump We jump You jump You (all) jump He or She jumps They jump • In Italian, we add special endings to verbs: Io –o Noi –iamo Tu –iVoi –ate Lui or Lei –a Loro –ano

Students have just begun more advanced conversation and are learning to alter verbs in order to express who is completing the action. With this information, students will be able to write complete, Italian sentences with a recognizable subject and correctly conjugated verb.
