2. The 2007-08 theme for the Accelerated Reader Program is “The Magical Mystery Tour.” This theme is based on the album by the Beatles. Each six weeks a new song is introduced with activities to accompany the theme. Students who reached their goals for the six weeks are able to participate in the activities.

First Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 5 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 10 points at 90% correct Students who reached their goal took a field trip to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. They researched different types of gardens, and based on the song, “Octopus’s Garden,” drew pictures and completed a written description of their imaginary garden with Octopus.

Second Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 6 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 12 points at 90% correct Students took a field trip to Skatetown, where they enjoyed skating with their friends and teachers. They returned with pictures and were instructed to write a descriptive story about their fun day. The stories were put on an instructional display with all the fun pictures.

Third Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 7 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 14 points at 90% correct Students took an all day field trip which began at Carroll Junior High where they toured a middle-school library comparing it to the elementary library at Barkdull Faulk. Later they toured the Ouachita Parish Library then watched the movie titled, “The Yellow Submarine.” Pictures were taken with a yellow submarine as a background. The last stop was at the Benoit Recreation Center where the students put together submarine sandwiches, then had fun with the activities provided at the Center.

Fourth Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 9 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 16 points at 90% correct Students will tour the library at Carroll High School and do a comparison with Barkdull Faulk’s Elementary Library. Plans are to tour a television station and experience a live broadcast. The last stop will be lunch at Pizza Hut.

Fifth Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 11 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 18 points at 90% correct Students will tour the library at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the local newspaper company and Books-a-Million. An author will be the guest speaker giving the students tips on writing a story. The students will create a book and the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders will create a webpage using the website – www.think.com

Sixth Six Weeks Goals set by grade level Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade 13 points at 90% correct 3rd through 6th Grade 20 points at 90% correct Students will spend the day at Kiroli Park with carnival type activities, where they will win prizes. We’ll fire up the grill for a 4th of July type barbeque. To cool things off, we’ll have some fun with a water slide.

16. Other Rewards Students who reach goals at the end of each six weeks will also get a pencil for each point made, and a bookmark. We have a five point, ten point, twenty point, etc. club where the students earn a charm bracelet and a charm to represent each point club.

19. Star Students Students are rewarded weekly if they pass five or more tests at 90% or make five or more points at 90%. A picture is taken of each student where they receive a copy along with a copy displayed on a big board that stays up all year. Snapfish

26. Extra Special At the end of each six weeks, one student from each grade level who is the top scorer, wins a special shirt with the theme, “The Magical Mystery Tour,” They are able to wear the shirt every Friday.

29. End of the Year Award Ceremony Students are showing off trophies that will be given away at the awards ceremony in May. The trophies are displayed in the library to remind students to READ.
