INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD • UCRIHS is an Institutional Review Board (IRB) UNIVERSITY COMMISION ON RESEARCH INVLOVING HUMAN SUBJECTS Federal and University regulations require that all research projects involving human subjects and materials of human origin be reviewed and approved by an IRB before initiation

UCHRIS Under the regulations, all investigators (faculty &/or graduate students) who will conduct research that involves human subjects or materials of human origin (blood or tissue samples taken from live humans) must submit an application to UCRIHS Approval of the research protocol must be in place before the investigator begins data collection. IRB Reliance is an agreement between MSU and Sparrow Hospital which allows an investigator to have a research protocol undergo IRB review through UCRIHS, and Sparrow will accept the review of the lead institution

Letter must identify: • Your research mentor • The research topic • Outline of the research plan • Expected product of research experience (e.g. paper or poster) • A letter from your research mentor. In the letter it must be stated that the mentor has agreed to work with you and the letter specifies: • Research topic • Research plan • Any patient contact during the research rotation. • Agreement to evaluate you at the end of the rotation using our form. • If you are requesting a weekly research experience spanning several months, your research mentor must agree to fill out an evaluation each quarter that you are involved in the weekly research experience.
