This presentation outlines the key elements of Oracle Designer and its role in the development lifecycle, emphasizing its capabilities in process modeling and prototyping. We'll review the class process for the upcoming seven weeks, discuss the importance of Oracle Designer in generating database objects and documents, and explore its application in creating working prototypes of screens and reports. Students will also receive guidance on accessing the tool and managing their projects effectively to avoid pitfalls. Homework assignments will be assigned weekly with deadlines.

CMIS 470Structured Systems Design Intro to Oracle Designer, Process Modeling Week 9
Our Plan • DUE TONIGHT: • Status report #1 • TONIGHT: • Introduction to Oracle • Our Class process for next 7 weeks • Oracle Process Models
Oracle Designer ? • So how does Oracle Designer fit in to all of this? • Developmental prototyping TOOL • Therefore useful in employing Developmental Prototyping Approach or Spiral Approach
Intro to Oracle Designer • What Oracle Designer Does • “automates the development life cycle” • Generates: • Database objects • Oracle Forms and Reports applications • Documents the system • Carries information from Analysis Design Implementation • Central shared repository
Intro to Oracle Designer • ANALYSIS • Process Models • ERD • FHD • DESIGN • Design Editor • Transformers • Database • Application • Generators • Database • Table API • Forms • Reports
Intro to Oracle Designer • Oracle Designer end result: • Actual application database • Working prototypes of screens and reports • Analysis and design documentation • ERDs, process models, etc.
Logon to Oracle Designer • Distribute userids • password = fall2003 • Log into Designer, then to change your password: • Start RON • Click the Tools pulldown menu • Select SQLPlus • At the SQL> prompt, enter: alter user xxxxxx identified by yyyyyy; where xxxxxx = your userid and yyyyyy = what you want your password to be

Class Process • In Class: I teach - We do • Hollywood Videos application • Individual Homework: Due the following week • Dream Getaways application • IMPORTANT CAVEAT!!! Do NOT work ahead in the Designer tool! If you aren’t careful, you can mess up your entire project and have to re-do it from the beginning (i.e., re-do your entire set of six Designer projects).
To-Do’s • Due next week: • Oracle Process Model homework • 2nd status report
