  2. What kind of food is Finnish food? • Traditions mean a lot for Finnish food culture. We still eat some foods, which we Finns have made for hundreds of years. • Our food is quite simple, because we haven’t had ever so much ingredients. Our food isn’t spicy, but still I think that Finnish food is very tasty. • Nature has been the most important source for get food. That’s why we Finns love nature’s ingredients, like fish (salmon and herring), meat (moose and reindeer) , berries and mushrooms. • Today normal Finnish dining table is very international and we enjoy new flavors very much. • However I will tell you now about traditional Finnish food and ingredients. 3. Traditional Finnish foods and ingredients • Potato is a basic ingredient in Finnish kitchen. We Finns have used potato for a long time in our dishes. In Finnish kitchen potato is often the main ingredient and we love to use it in many ways (for example smashed potatoes, boiled potatoes and also ingredient in soups). • We Finns also like to eat soups. We have many different types of soups , like pea soup and fish soup. All Finnish soups include a lot of root vegetables, like potato and carrot. • Summer is in Finland the barbecue season. From early spring to late autumn almost every Finn barbecues food in a barbecue. The most eaten barbecue food in Finland is sausage. Sausage is easy food to cook and that’s one big reason why Finns eat it so much. Werneri Huhtinen

  4. Rye bread is very important food to Finns. It is dark bread and it has much more taste than normal white bread has. It is the most popular bread in Finland. • At Easter one of Finns’ favorite dessert is mämmi. It is particularlytraditional Finnish dessert. Its main ingredients are water, malt and rye flour. 5. Christmas food • Normal Finnish dining table is full of many dishes at Christmas. Hardly anyone could leave with empty stomach from Finnish Christmas meal. • Christmas meal includes a number of dishes. The most typical dishes are ham, different types of fish, Karelian stew and many casseroles. • Usually we Finns wake up early at Christmas eave and start to cook the Christmas ham, because it takes several hours to ripen in oven. Also other typical Finnish Christmas dishes are cooked in oven. • Casseroles are made in oven and they look a bit like smashed potatoes. We have many different types of casseroles, like potato- , carrot- and swede casserole. Photo - CHRISTMAS HAM Werneri Huhtinen

  6. Finns' favorite delicacies • Berries and mushrooms are annual delicacies. In autumn Finns go to forest and collect berries (blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries) and mushrooms. • Salmiakki is a sweet, which resembles liquorice. Salmiakki is flavored with salt. It is very popular in Finland and I think that it is the best sweet in world. • Fazerin sininen is traditional Finnish bar of chocolate. It is sweet milk chocolate, which taste every Finn loves. It has also lot of variations, but I think that the original one is the best one. Photo – SALMIAKKI Photo - FAZERIN SININEN Photo – BLUEBERRIES Werneri Huhtinen
