  5. Cigarette Smoking • The single greatest preventable cause of premature death in the U.S • 24 % of non Hispanic, black men smoke • 17.2% of non Hispanic, black women smoke

  7. Overweight and obesity • 79.6% of non Hispanic, black women ages 20 or older are overweight or obese • 67% of non Hispanic, black men ages 20 and older are overweight or obese • Causes a raise in blood pressure and cholesterol levels • All the excess weight puts a strain on the heart

  8. High blood pressure

  9. “Silent Killer” • High blood pressure has no symptoms, aka “ the silent killer” • 42.6% of non Hispanic, black men • 46.6% of non Hispanic , black women • Compared to whites, black people are more likely to have high blood pressure • Diabetes also help the risk of high blood pressure

Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of your chest that last more then a few minuets • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaws, or stomach, • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort • other signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness Warning signs of a heart attack

Breakdown • Around 40% of African American men and women have a form of heart disease, compared to 24% of white men and women. • The deaths from heart disease among African American men is 33.6 % higher and 38.5 percent higher for women. • African Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever stroke. • Stroke in African American men is 51.8 percent higher, while African American women is 36.8 percent higher.

Syphilis • Syphilis is 30 times higher for African Americans than for white Americans. • primary and secondary syphilis among African Americans is 20 times greater than the rate among non-Hispanic whites. • Reported primary and secondary syphilis rates among 15 - 19 year old males and females are higher for African Americans than for other racial and ethnic group

Gonorrhea • approximately 68% of the total number of cases of gonorrhea reported to CDC occurred among African Americans • gonorrhea rates among African-American men were 24 times higher than among white men; gonorrhea rates among African-American women were 14 times higher than among white women

Chlamydia • 41.6% of all Chlamydia cases occurred among blacks, 28.8% occurred among whites, and 18.1% occurred among Hispanics. • Chlamydia among black females was more than seven times higher than the rate among white females • The Chlamydia rate among black males was more than 11 times higher than that among white males

  17. AIDS/HIV • African Americans are 5 times higher than Caucasians • Teens 13-19 account for 1,919 AIDS cases • Teens 13-19 account for 3,517 HIV cases • 62% of HIV cases are females • 55% of AIDS cases are females
