  1. InfraphylumHyperotreti • Class Myxini = Hagfish • Characteristics: • Cartilaginous bars support their heads. • Their brains are enclosed in a fibrous sheath. • Have a notochord, but no vertebrae. • Tentacles surround their mouths • Ventro-lateral slime glands. • Found in cold water areas. • Highly primitive. • Feed on soft-bodied invertebrates and scavenge dead and dying fish. • Hagfish will enter a fishes body through their mouth and eat the internal parts leaving skin and bones.

  2. Infraphylum Vertebrata Consist of 2 living classes. Petromyzontida– Lampreys Gnathostome – Jawed Vertebrates. One extinct group Ostracoderms– Bottom dwelling, armored fish.

  3. Class Petromyzontida Lampreys Marine and Freshwater Sucker-like mouth with moveable tongue-like structure. Anticoagulant in salivary glands, which will not allow the blood to clot. Larval stages filter feed. Have invaded the Great Lakes region.

  4. Superclass Gnathostomata Three Classes Chondrichthyes - Cartilaginous bodies. Osteichthyes – bony fish(2 classes) Scarcopterygii Lungfish Actinopterygii Ray-finned fish

  5. Class Chondrichthyes • Sharks, skates, and rays.(820 species) • Usually Carniverousor Scavengers • Paired appendages help in movement and balance • Placoid Scales • Give the skin a tough, sandpaper texture. • Reduce friction with water • Sharks teeth are modified Placoid scales. • Lack a swim bladder. • Skates and Rays: • Bodies adapted for life on the ocean floor. • Like shallow water. • Feed on invertebrates. • Pectoral fins are extended to form wing-like appendages.

  6. Interesting Facts about members of Chondrichthyes • The largest shark is the Whale shark which may grow up to 21 meters long. • The largest predatory shark is the Great White Shark which may grow up to 7 meters long. • The smallest known shark is the Cylindrical Lantern Shark that is only 21cm long. • The fastest shark is probably the Short fin Makoshark which can swim fast enough to catch tuna and swordfish. • The largest ray is the Manta Ray which can have a 7 meter wing span. • The shark with the longest pregnancy is the Spiny Dogfish which may incubate its young for more than two years (the longest gestation of any vertebrate).
