  2. Worldwonders • In antiquitypeople made a list of the 7 wonders of the world. • 7 buildings thatwere, at the time, the highest, largest, most beautiful or technicallyadvanced. • 1 pyramid was on the list: Pyramid of Cheops, nearGiza. • Called, the Great Pyramid. • The only wonder of the 7 thatstillexists.

  3. The Great Pyramid. • It is 230 m wide, 146 m high andconsistsof 2,3 millionlimestoneblocks. • It tookthem 20 yearsto built it.

  4. How werethey made. • We never found a picture of the construction of pyramids. • We thinkthis is howithappened:

  5. Limestoneblockswouldcomefrom a quarry (=groeve) nearby. • Workerswould lift the blocks of stoneontowoodensleds. Withropestheywouldbepulledto the pyramid. • At the pyramid the blockswouldbepulled up over a slope ( = helling) to put them in place. • The slope was made of stone, sandand mud andwould have circled the pyramidlike a spiral. • When the pyramid was fisnished, theytake the slopeaway.

  6. For a long time we believedpyramidswere built byslaves. But that is nottrue. Youneed at least 4000 men to cut, towand move the blocks. Youneed more peoplefor making the sledsandwhotook care of the slopes. Youneedpeopletocarry the water andprovidedeveryonewith food.

  7. Function of the pyramid • They are tombsfor the pharaohs • Whydo they look like a triangle: • 1. itrepresents a stairwayfor the soul toclimbto the stars. The pharaohwouldbecome a star. • 2. the pyramid looks likeanoldhillwhich Ra stood at the beginning of creation.

  8. Cheops is built perfectly: the differencebetween the longestand the shortest side is 20 cm.

  9. Inside the pyramid • 1 entrance, • Behindit was a corridor. • The hallwayends in a chamber, thatwill lead to 2 otherchambers in the centre of the pyramid. • No treasureswere found, theywereprobablyraided ( gestolen)

  10. There was also a boatnear the pyramid. • Use: • 1. transport the body to the pyramid, • 2 or could the pharaohuseitto go to the afterlife?

  11. Otherpyramids • The pyramid of Cheops is not the oldestone. • The first one was built in 2650 BC, byDjoser. • It is anenormousstaircase. • In 2545 BC the pyramid of Cheops was built. • Nearthis big one, are 2 smaller ones, for the sonandgrandson of Cheops. • In totalthere are about 100 pyramids in Egypt.
