  5. About the Design Challenge • 16 community-level teams total • Competitively selected • Teams worked during 6 months to design a ready-to-launch responsive and sustainable solution Design Challenge Grants 5

What is Design Thinking A creative process that helps you design meaningful solutions The methodology commonly referred to as design thinking is a proven and repeatable problem-solving protocol that any business or profession can employ to achieve extraordinary results. Design thinking is, then, always linked to an improved future. 6

  8. Two Phases Each community gains confidence that it has crafted a solution that: Goal 1:Will be wanted and used by customers-Desirability Goal 2:Can be operationally and technologically feasible-Feasibility Goal 3: Can be financially launch and sustained-Viability 8

Phase I May to July - Begin with 2 proposed solutions • Learn about each solution through conversations with partners and potential customers • Strengthen each solution using results from feedback and other research Phase 1 concludes with the team forming a single solution to take into Phase 2 9

Phase II August through October -- Begin with single solution • Learn about the solution through conversations with partners and potential customers • Strengthen the solution using results from conversations and other research • Prepare a business plan that provides a roadmap for customer outreach and marketing, operations, and financial sustainability • Prepare and deliver a presentation – a pitch – describing the solution Solutions may be tested with actual customers 10

Implementation & Scaling-up: Diffusion Innovation • Innovators – 2% - Risk taking, first to adopt • Early adopters – 13.5%- Product maturing • Early majority – 34% - Product widely known, mainstream • Late majority – 34% - Cautious, wait for decline in pricing, data, etc. • Laggards – 16% - really late to implement Everett Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovation theory, 1962 12

Diffusion Theory Framework (1) Knowledge – person becomes aware of innovation (2) Persuasion – person forms a favorable or unfavorable attitude (3) Decision – person engages in activities that lead to a choice to adopt or reject the innovation (4) Implementation – person puts an innovation into use (5) Confirmation – person evaluates the results of an innovation-decision 13
