  1. State Update Presentations State of Illinois 2012 MAGIC GIS Clearinghouse Summit Sioux Falls, SD EROS Data Center

  2. Clearinghouse Services • Q1: What type of services do you provide? • Data archival • Data distribution • Web services (WMS, WFS, ArcGIS, Imagery) • Database development/area integration • Cartographic development • Metadata development • Application development • Application hosting • Geospatial data inventory • Coordination/outreach • Training • Illinois does not provide these types of services to anyone. We currently only do this sort work for our own data holdings. • We would at least like to expand our clearinghouse to include data and services from our sister surveys in the Prairie Research Institute.

  3. Funding Q2: How are those services funded? There is no direct funding of the clearinghouse, it’s always been on a project by project basis where part of the deliverable needs some distribution, and therefore indirectly funds clearinghouse activities. There are also a few positions (~3) that have clearinghouse task components in their workplan.

  4. Challenges Q3: What is your greatest Clearinghouse challenge at this time? Modernization. We have stagnated for a few years without any people to carry out clearinghouse duties, and so much has changed recently in terms of technology (both from the standpoint of GIS, but also just IT, web dev, etc…).

  5. Backup architecture • Q4: What is your backup architecture – does it include written policies? • Nightly differentials • Weekly incremental backups – saved ~4 weeks • Monthly full backups to tape go in 3rd floor vault and kept for ~2 years • Periodically taken offsite to another survey building • Written policies exist, we have a disaster management plan, but it needs to be revisited and updated in the near future.

  6. Database Development & Integration Q5: Does your clearinghouse support database development projects that involve the integration of local/regional data sets? Not at this time.

  7. Inventory Q6: Have you implemented a GIS data inventory tool within your state? There have been a couple of pushes in the past to use the GIS Inventory (Ramona), and there is a new effort by ILGISA, Illinois’s state GIS association, to further populate the GIS Inventory. Currently, though there are fewer than 70 entries in the GIS Inventory for Illinois.

  8. Staffing • Q7: How is your organization staffed? Please list positions title and full or part time status. • 3 GRF (hard money) funded position • Web administrator (since August 2012) • Geospatial Applications Developer (since September 2012) • Section Head (since August 2011) • 1 contract funded position • All of these positions have at least a component of clearinghouse work tasks in them, but none are 100% clearinghouse.

  9. Archive Policy Q8: Has your state developed a record retention/archival policy for geospatial data? We generally include language in any new grants or contracts that online resources produced with the grant will be supported for 2 years following project completion.

  10. Technology: GIS Server Q9: Which of the following GIS Server software are utilized by your organization? (ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, AGS Image Extension, Map Server, Other?) ArcIMS – phasing out ArcGIS Server Image Extension – but not public yet as of the filling out of this survey

  11. Technology: GIS Server Q10: If your organization is running ArcGIS Server, have you upgraded to version 10.1? Yes, No, Issues encountered? We have a couple of development machines up for 10.1. So far no really big SNAFUs, but a little annoying that you have to rebuild services. However, the scripting available for server at 10.1 looks very promising.

  12. Technology: GIS Server Q11: Which Web API's are utilized by your organization? (JavaScript, Flex, Silverlight, Undecided) JavaScript (Google Maps JavaScript API) ArcGIS API for Flex

  13. Technology: GIS Server Q12: Does your state GIS portal utilize the ArcGIS Server Geoportal Extension? No, not yet.

  14. Technology: ArcGIS Online Q13: Are you currently publishing data and services via ArcGIS Online? Only in personal accounts. We have an EDC agreement with Esri and as part of that we hope soon to have a organizational subscription.

  15. Technology: Cloud Computing Q14: Are you currently using Cloud computing services? For example, a pre-built ArcGIS Server instance running in the Amazon Cloud or a Cloud-based storage solution? No.

  16. Technology: Mobile Applications Q15: What, if any, mobile applications have been developed or are planned to be developed? What platforms are being supported (iOS, Android, Windows Mobile)? What technologies are being used? None so far. Perhaps some lightweight versions of our web applications.
