The Crucible Act 1 Recap
John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair • When his wife found out, she fired Abigail, who was working as their housekeeper • 7 months later, Abigail danced in the woods with the other girls, but she took it too far and said a charm and drank blood to kill John Proctor’s wife • Rev. Parris, Abigail’s uncle, caught them all dancing • Out of embarrassment, 2 of the girls won’t wake up the next morning, prompting rumors of witchcraft • Rev. Hale (witch expert) comes to see them, and Abigail calls Tituba a witch to distract attention from herself • Tituba falsely confesses to save her own life, and names other witches to distract attention from herself (2 women the Putnams want to believe are witches) • All the girls like the positive attention Tituba is getting, so they join in in the “crying out” and start calling out names of people they claim are witches
