Computational Methods and Tools for Text Analysis and Translation: A TRADOS Overview

This course by Gabrielė Šalčiūtė-Čivilienė focuses on computational tools essential for querying electronic texts. Participants will learn about key principles of computational text analysis, explore morphological and syntactic patterns, and analyze statistical data from various corpora to enhance translation accuracy. Topics include an overview of TRADOS, COCA, and AntConc, alongside techniques for managing translation memories and databases. The course aims to bridge theory and practice, enriching translators' understanding of electronic resources and their applications.

  1. Computational Methods & Tools for Text Analysis & Translation: TRADOS Gabrielė Šalčiūtė-Čivilienė gabriele.salciute-civiliene@kcl.ac.uk 31 May 2013

  2. PREREQUISITES • Lexicological and lexicographic aspects of translation • Translation theory and practice

  3. AIM OF COURSE • to teach the core principles of computational tools employed to query e-texts; • to highlight similarities and differences between the aims and outcomes of small text and large-scale analyses; • to search for morphological, lexical and syntactic patterns in corpora and in e-texts; • to read statistical data extracted from corpora and texts and to make use of it in interpreting and translating.

  4. FREQUENCY LISTS • Querying texts; • Analyzing and interpreting texts; • Understanding text patterns; • Building electronic dictionaries; • Managing translation.

  5. STRUCTURE • Structured around 3 tools => • The COCA • AntConc • TRADOS

  6. TRADOS • Standards and principles of machine translation and translation memories; • Building and managing databases with machine-translation tools: text statistics, matches and translation memories; • Editing translations and tracking by using various functions of machine translation.
