  1. Green Environmental Management System ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SERVICES (EMS) RECYCLING TRAINING

  2. Green Environmental Management System EXECUTIVE ORDER13693 PLANNING FOR FEDERAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE NEXT DECADE Sec. 3. Sustainability Goals for Agencies. In implementing the policy set forth in section 1 of this order and to achieve the goals of section 2 of this order, the head of each agency shall, where life-cycle cost-effective, beginning in fiscal year 2016, unless otherwise specified: (j) Advance waste prevention and pollution prevention by: (ii) diverting at least 50 percent of non-hazardous solid waste, including food and compostable material but not construction and demolition materials and debris, annually, and pursuing opportunities for net-zero waste or additional diversion opportunities; For FY2017 Bedford VA current recycling percentage is 49% {Original Executive Order 13514: Achieve 50% or higher diversion rate: Non-hazardous solid waste by FY2015.}

  3. Green Environmental Management System Important things to remember while collecting recycling: Recycling and trash are separated at Bedford VAMC Our recycling contractor DOES NOT separate the trash from the recycling; therefore, all Housekeepers must separate trash from recyclable materials If there is food in a recycling bag, it is now considered contaminated and would be placed into the trash • Fluids present in the recycling bags DO NOT necessarily mean the recycling bag becomes trash, it is important to use one’s judgment to decide if the bag is contaminated or not • A good rule of thumb on deciding if recycling is contaminated or not is the smell, if the fluids do not have a nasty smell, then it will be acceptable to go to recycling

  4. Green Environmental Management System For Housekeepers collecting recycling, there are areas where the recycling is staged so that it can be picked up and transported to the Recycling Center. • There are FIVE locations at Bedford VAMC where recyclables are staged: Building 12 Basement (Parking lot Entrance) Building 70 Loading Dock (Back of the Building) • Building 3 • Next to the Mail Room • (Cardboard Only) Building 78 Room B29 Building 61 Room B18

  5. Green Environmental Management System Recycling Bins Paper (all color), Small Cardboard Items, Magazines, Catalogs, Newspapers, etc. • Non-Contaminated/ Clean: • Glass, Plastics, Metals, • Cans, Bottles, Jars, etc. Paper Recycling (Same as Blue Bin) Mixed Recycling (Same as Green Bin) Trash Only • Confidential Paper requiring • Shredding / destruction

  6. Green Environmental Management System Trash Bins Small Trash Only Bins Found in Most Office/Conference Rooms Medium Trash Only Bins Found Throughout the Campus Mini Trash Only Compactors Found in the Canteen Cafeteria Trash Only Dumpsters

  7. Green Environmental Management System Trash Compactors Any recycling materials thrown into the compactors become trash. The compactor materials Are Not Separated once the materials leave the campus. Trash Compactors Located behind Building 3(Green) Building 6(Brown) These are for TRASH ONLY!!

  9. Green Environmental Management System Gaylord's in Recycling Center to Separate Recyclable Materials Recycling Center Entrance in Building 19 • THE BEDFORD VAMC RECYCLING CENTER Building 19 Cardboard Recycling Bundle Recycling Center Truck

  10. Green Environmental Management System Bedford VAMC recycles all tree/bush trimmings, grass clippings, and Grounds materials at the compost site. The materials are reused every Spring throughout the campus to supplement new dirt or mulch. • Compost Site Located past the Golf Course Driving Range

  11. Green Environmental Management System THE BEDFORD VAMC RECYCLING CENTER SILVEROXIDE Universal Waste NICKEL-CADMIUM (Ni-Cd) ALKALINE LITHIUM (Li) (Li-ion) BATTERIES NICKEL-METAL HYDRIDE (Ni-MH)

  12. Green Environmental Management System THE BEDFORD VAMC RECYCLING CENTER E-Waste • Computer-related Electronics: electronics with large circuitry that is computer-related. • Examples include processors, mice, keyboards, laptops, disk drives, printers, modems, and fax machines. Other Small Consumer Electronics: portable non-computer-related electronics with large circuitry. Examples include personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, phone systems, phone answering machines, computer games and other electronic toys, portable CD players, camcorders, and digital Cameras.

  13. Green Environmental Management System THE BEDFORD VAMC RECYCLING CENTER Universal Waste Fluorescent Bulbs (Containing Mercury) • Containers must have proper Universal Waste labels • Containers must remain closed unless placing items into container • The Accumulation Date must be written on the label • The Accumulation Date must not exceed 1 year

  14. Green Environmental Management System Mixed Paper Recycling Papers Magazines All Paper Products Cardboard PLEASE DO NOT RECYCLE ANY PAPER MATERIAL THAT CONTAINS PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION (PII) If the item is to large to fit in bin please place it behind the bin for housekeeping

  16. Green Environmental Management System Pest Management • Personal Comfort from Pests. • A state of being in the human work environment that allows an employee the freedom of discomfort from pests in their Environment. An example would be freedom from the stressful discomfort of being at risk of bee stings in their work environment. • Employees discovering an insect/pest infestation or animal pest within the medical center will report the observation to EMS by calling ext. 2759/2618, emailing the EMS Chief/Assistant Chief, or physically filling out the Pest Log Book located in the EMS Office.

  17. Green Environmental Management System Allergies Pest Management • Personal Comfort from Allergies. • A state of being in the human work environment that allows an employee the freedom of discomfort from Allergies in their Environment. • An example would be freedom from the stressful discomfort of Strong Perfumes/Colognes

  18. Green Environmental Management System Legionella Disease (Legionnaires’ Disease) Legionella Disease (traditionally known as Legionnaires’ Disease) is caused by the Legionella bacteria. The Legionella bacteria is found in water systems, such as building water distribution systems and water cooling towers. Legionella Disease, a form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, occurs during the inhalation of the mist from a Legionella-contaminated hot or cold water source, like breathing in the mist of a showerhead contaminated with the bacterium. Legionella bacteria live and thrive in devices like showerheads and sink aerators. The Bedford VA is required, through various directives, to take measures in preventing the risk of developing Legionella bacteria in its water distribution systems. All sink aerators within patient care buildings have been removed and water sources are sampled quarterly for the Legionella bacterium. Engineering controls of water temperatures are an example of preventive measures against the proliferation of the Legionella bacteria, but the best preventive measure concerns the presence of a disinfectant biocide in the drinking water system. Bedford VA receives its drinking water from Lexington, MA. It has been treated with the monochloramine biocide to kill bacteria, including Legionella. As the drinking water runs through the pipes from the south end of the campus to the north, the biocide slowly dissipates or disappears from the water lines. Therefore, water sitting in a pipe without any flow will have little to no biocide left to kill the bacteria, so EMS has been tasked with “flushing” water through all the sinks and showerheads of various buildings in order to replenish this biocide. Bedford VA has had no cases of Legionella Disease.
