  4. Personal Reading • Every day of class, we will start with independent silent reading. Please pick a book that you think that you will like. If you don’t like it, feel free to switch books. This may or may not be a book that you do your book review on.

  7. Phones and restrooms • Please do not use your electronic devices in this classroom. You may use your them with my permission for educational purposes only. • Please limit your restroom passes for emergencies only. Please sign out before taking the pass.

  8. What is ELA 10? • A year-long required class • Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing • We cover composition and American Literature from before 1600 to the present.

  9. What is ELA 10? (cont.) • Several formal and informal writings, including: personal narrative, timed writings, literary analysis, problem-solution, persuasion, cause-effect, and research papers. • Preparation for AP Language and Composition (Over 1/3 of AP students come from ELA 10). • Preparation for the ACT

  10. ELA 10 Assessment • Common mid-term • ACT format/essay • Common final • ACT format/essay • Each worth 20% of the semester grade

  11. What is ELA 10? (cont.) • Major works will include: • Huckleberry Finn • Of Mice and Men • The Great Gatsby • Farewell to Manzanar • The Crucible

Other points of emphasis: • Relevant current articles are reviewed and analyzed regularly • One Book, One School program • Alignment of ELA 10 with the vision of APHS, i.e. encouraging the intellectual growth, creativity, self-discipline, democratic responsibility and physical and mental health • A Pre-AP program for English Language and Lit. • Collins Writing Program
