  2. Agenda • How Big Is The Problem • Easy Savings • Data Center Virtualization • Equipment Refresh Opportunities • Wireless LAN • IP Telephony • LAN Refresh • Power It Down

  3. Rising Energy Consumption in the Data Center

  4. Go Green • Reduce hazardous waste • Reduce global warming • Reduce carbon footprint • Reduce energy consumption • Reduce cost of operations

  5. What Are Organizations Focusing On

  6. Energy Reductions • Power down power strips at night • Upgrade to newer, more efficient UPS 97% vs. 70%-80% • Switch to networked laser printers • Implement fax server • Refresh more energy efficient PCs -> Laptops • Reduce travel with video conferencing • Raise the temperature in the data center

  7. Virtualize Servers and Storage • Virtualizing servers and storage can drastically reduce • Power Consumption • Carbon Emissions • Cap-Ex Costs • Op-Ex Costs

  8. How Big Is The Problem • According to the EPA, servers consume 40% of total datacenter power consumption. • Site infrastructure—including cooling of equipment—accounts for another 50 percent of total datacenter power consumption. • x86 servers typically house only a single application, their processors sit idle 85-95 percent of the time. While sitting idle, these servers use nearly as much power as they do when they are active. • Hardware capacity is typically over-provisioned for peak loads because it is hard to adjust dynamically. The result is too much hardware that is highly inefficient at delivering IT services • According to analysts, companies maintain roughly three years of excess hardware capacity due to this vast underutilization. With more than seven million servers sold annually, this represents more than 20 million servers sitting idle and wasting energy

  9. Server Consolidation • Virtualization technology allows organizations to run multiple application and OS workloads on the same server. • Ten server workloads running on a single physical server is typical. • Some organizations are consolidating as many as 30 or 40 workloads onto one server. • Utilization of x86 servers increases from the typical 8-15 percent to 70-80 percent. • Reducing the number of physical servers through virtualization cuts power and cooling costs and provides more computing power in less space. As a result, energy consumption typically decreases by 80 percent

  10. Environmental Impact of Virtualization • Every server that is virtualized saves 7,000 kWh of electricity. • Every server virtualized is equivalent to removing 4 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2)from the environment or taking 1.5 cars off the road annually. • Green your IT infrastructure while improving reliability, availability and service levels.

  11. Equipment Refresh • Less is More • Devices • Wattage • The cooling multiplier: • It is estimated that every $1 on power requires another $2 on cooling! • Newer = More efficient

  12. Wireless LAN Refresh Savings Network Rightsizing 802.11n at 150 Mbs makes it possible One AP serves many = less LAN switches over switch

  13. Excess switch capacity Multiple ports per user Costly cabling Expensive changes Inherent Wired Network Inefficiencies

  14. Network Rightsizing Economics 1k users, 225k ft2 Office 4 ports/person, No Wireless LAN 2 ports/person + Pervasive 802.11n Initial Build Out 2,062 cable pulls (@$200 each) $412,400 44 Ethernet Switches $277,200 62 APs, 2 Controllers $85,622 Total (street price) $775,222 Total (per user) $775 Initial Build Out 4,000 cable pulls (@$200 each) $800,000 85 Ethernet Switches $535,500 Total (street price) $1,335,500 Total (per user) $1,336 Annual Operation Costs Maintenance Fees (15% of list) $133,875 Add, Move, Change, Upkeep $142,800 Depreciation/Refresh (5 year cycle) $107,100 Power & Cooling $23,970 Total (street price) $407,745 Total (per user) $408 Annual Operation Costs Maintenance Fees $77,350 Add, Move, Change, Upkeep $98,720 Depreciation/Refresh (5 year cycle) $72,564 Power & Cooling $12,919 Total (street price) $261,554 Total (per user) $262 15 Rightsized Network Edge Costs ~40% Less To Build & Maintain

  15. Other Wireless LAN Savings Opportunities • Watts that different APs draw • Adjustable Radio Management – Adjusts radio power and power consumption • Management and Control - how many devices • Controller • Policy enforcement • Intrusion protection • Encryption • Captive portal • Firewall • VPN

  16. Integrated High Performance & Scalability Controllers for 2,000 APs ESM FWSM FWSM FWSM FWSM SUP720 Or 6506-E 6506-E

  17. IP Telephony Refresh Savings • Old TDM systems are big power hungry boxes • IPT systems use existing switch infrastructure and software running on server

  18. PoE Competitive Summary • Look for Phone models that are the most power efficient: • Class 2 = 3.84W to 6.49W • Class 3 = up to 12.95W • Low power phone advantages: • Requires less A/C power within building or facility • Requires less air conditioning / cooling in switch rooms and wiring closets

  19. LAN Refresh Savings • Use 2 Tier Network Architecture Instead of 3 Tier Where Possible • High density switches enable eliminating layers • Many mid-Enterprise networks moving to 2-tier instead of 3-tier • Focus on Energy Efficient Switches • Efficient Power Supplies • Variable Speed Fans • OS with energy saving features

  20. Power It Down • Universal Port Framework • Switch Port automation profiles • Time-based triggers can power down non-essential devices at pre-defined times • Can work with any PoE IP endpoint: phones, wireless APs • Universal port manager: simplifies centralizes management

  21. Preparation Operation Universal Port Automation Application: Green power savings – the automated power down of a blockof IP phones in area of building not regularly used at night or weekends 3 Event: Time triggeredevent - at 5:00 PM at endof specified day shift 4 Response:Universal port setting triggers the application of the UP profiles to power off the IP handsets on specified edge ports. Result: Power savings for phones and supporting switch ports. Similar automation to power on before next shift. Administrator 1 Create enterpriseedge policies 2 Deploy Automated Power Savings modules and policies to switches

  22. Go Green Solution Scenario: School District 400 person group in District 8-6, Mon-Fri for most workers yet, desk phones and APs are powered 7x24 350 non-essential desk phones and APs Universal Port: power down at 6:00pm each evening, restart at 8:00am the next morning Power savings over the weekend Immediate 75% electricity savings

  23. Go Green Solution School District – Summer Vacation Assume 25 school buildings K-12 Assume 50 desk phones per school – 1,250 phones total Very light utilizationduring the summer months Assume 10 phones per school needed in the summer (250) Universal Port: power down the other 1,000 desk phonesfor the summer months Automatically power them up, prior to school starting 80% power savingsover the summer district wide
