  6. Safety Regulations • Pleasure Craft Regulations 2005 • Responsibility lies with the Cox’n to apply • The regulations apply to RIB’s or craft capable of 17 knots or more • A fast power boat

Summary of Regulations • Persons under 16 years cannot operate or be in control of ‘fast power craft’ • A personal flotation device (PFD) worn by all personal on boats less than 7mtrs • Boats over 7mtrs must have PFD’s on board for all personnel • It is prohibited to operate fast power craft under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  9. Harbour & Local Authority Bye-Laws • Obtain Licences where required • Obtain Permission from Harbour Master or Local Authority • Adhere to all Local Bye-Laws i.e. speed limits • Respect local amenities i.e. keep slipways clear • Leave everything as you found it

  11. Mariners Highway Code • Always maintain a good lookout • In a narrow shipping lane, keep as far as possible to starboard. (R.H.)

  12. Keep Astern Mariners Highway Code • In a shipping lane or channel, where large vessels have to keep to a defined course, avoid trying to cross. • They may not even see you.

  13. Mariners Highway Code • Vessel approaching from starboard • May be risk of collision • You must give way. • Allow your craft to slow down • Pass behind other vessel • If in DOUBT • SLOW Down • Be prepared to STOP

Salvage • If possible, never accept a tow • If you must be towed, use your towing line • If possible, agree salvage with salvor • Insist on Lloyds Open Agreement being used • Rights of the Salvor: “The salvor has the right to claim on the vessels owners a negotiable and unspecified amount". This law is covered by the "Merchant Shipping Act 1894" which governs all salvage • Irish State Emergency Service do not operate a salvage policy • Use them as recommended
