This research investigates the effectiveness of electric barriers in preventing Asian carp movement in the Upper IWW/CAWS. Utilizing individually coded ultrasonic transmitters, 200 fish, including bighead and silver carp as well as surrogate species, were tagged and monitored. The study aimed to assess whether these fish could breach barriers and navigate lock structures. Initial findings indicate high detection rates of tagged fish, with no breaches observed at the barrier. The study lays the groundwork for future telemetric approaches to manage invasive species effectively.

MRRP Telemetry • Tagging of fish with individually coded ultrasonic transmitters in the Upper IWW/CAWS; • Acoustic network supplemented by a mobile hydrophone unit to collect information from tags (N=200) implanted into free-swimming Asian carp (bighead carp and silver carp) and surrogate species; • Purpose is to monitor fish movements in the immediate vicinity of the Barrier to determine if fish are able to challenge and/or penetrate the Barrier; if Asian carp are able to navigate through lock structures in the Upper IWW; and to determine the leading edge of Asian carp.

Barrier Receivers • Need better detection resolution of fish at Barrier to determine EXACT location of fish in detection range • 2011: Procure four VR4 Receivers • Deploy for five years • Surface downloads (modem, no need to retrieve receivers) • Positioning data can determine EXACT location of fish, data is processed by Vemco • Pilot study in March; not available for retail until June
Summary • No tagged fish have crossed Barrier • 61 Tags detected July - Oct • CAWS: 61 out of 87 tags detected (70%) • 18 tags were implanted in Nov, not included in detection rate analysis • High rate detection considering open system and use of passive detection; more active detection to be used in 2011 • Lockport Pool Below Barrier: 29 out of 29 tags detected (100%) • New VR4 Receivers to be deployed June 2011 THANK YOU to ILDNR and USFWS for tagging and field assistance
