  2. Learning Objective • I will learn how to identify themes in stories and think about what they mean

  3. Activate Prior Knowledge • Main Idea/ Author’s Purpose. • We already know how to find the main idea in a story or paragraph. Author’s purpose why was it written to entertain, persuade, call to action, inform

  4. Example of Main Idea/Purpose • Example: Christmas is the best time of year. People are singing, eating cookies, visiting family and giving gifts. Main idea :Christmas time is good Author’s Purpose: persuade

  5. Definition • Theme is the central idea, concern or purpose for the writing. • Example 1 Tortoise and the Hare : Never Give up/ boasting • Example 2 Little Red Hen: Hard work pays off/ teamwork Non Example: That the story is about a race or about making bread.

  6. Connection to Learning Objective Newspapers are organized by “Themes” Sports Section, Business, National and Global Recognizing themes helps to organize ideas Learn a moral or lesson from the story • On DBA • On CST • Will need in high school and college

  7. Recurring Themes in Literature • Love • Good vs. Evil • Courage – Doing something even when afraid • Prejudice – Judging someone by how they look • Humility- Not bragging about oneself • Wisdom and Inexperience- With age comes knowledge gained through many life experiences…

  8. Skill Development : Identify Theme • Read passage look for main characters words and actions. • Underline verbs, adjectives

  9. Skill Development: Analyze Theme • Think about WHY character does what he does • Think about WHY character feels the way he does

  10. Guided Practice • Read short story: look for context clues • Read Stage Fright • Read poem: look for main idea (often what is repeated) • Read I Am

  11. Closure: • 1. What did you learn today? • How to identify and analyze themes across works • 2. How can you identify theme? • Look for main idea • 3. How can you analyze a passage? • Think about why/how character feels and • does what he does.
