Classes are: • - 3 units • 2 days a week Additional ESL Classes and topics of study Reading ESL 130 – Academic Reading I (ESL 45 & higher) Strengthen and build your skills in reading comprehension of academic writing, magazine articles, and a novel. Develop your ability to summarize and use academic vocabulary, and improve your reading speed. ESL 131 – Academic Reading II (ESL 101, 102, 103) Strengthen and build your skills in reading comprehension of academic material, newspapers, and classic literature. Focus on vocabulary development and academic speaking. Pronunciation/Speaking ESL 9 – Pronunciation I (NESL 303 & higher) Improve your English pronunciation and practice pronouncing English sounds, words, phrases, and sentences while developing conversational speaking skills. ESL 10 – Pronunciation II (NESL 304 &higher) Analyze and improve your English pronunciation skills by listening to native speakers as well as yourself. Develop advanced listening skills and knowledge of English language pronunciation in order to monitor and improve your speaking. ESL 20 – Academic Speaking/Listening (NESL 304 & higher) Improve your English language listening and speaking including communication skills in presentations and conversations. Computer Literacy (a noncredit class) N ESL 383 – Computer Literacy for ESL (NESL 303 & higher) Develop one of the 21st century life skills—how to use the computer. Topics include: computer basics, Windows basics, word processing skills, file management, Internet skills, email skills, PowerPoint skills, and Excel basics. Grammar ESL 12 - Grammar Skills I (NESL 304 & higher) Begin improving your knowledge and use of English grammar including: parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, modal verbs, prepositions), verb tenses (simple present, present progressive, simple past, past progressive), basic subject-verb agreement, and sentences (simple and compound) ESL 13 - Grammar Skills II (ESL 45 &higher) Continue improving your knowledge and use of English grammar including: nouns and pronouns, subject-verb agreement, clauses and sentences (simple, compound and complex with adverb clauses), verb tenses (simple past, past progressive, present perfect, present perfect progressive), gerunds and infinitives, and modal verbs. ESL 14 - Grammar Skills III (ESL 55 & higher) Continue improving your knowledge and use of advanced English grammar including: verb tenses (present perfect, present perfect progressive, past perfect, past perfect progressive), complex sentences (adverb clauses, adjective clauses, noun clauses), adjective phrases and participial adjectives, reduced adverb clauses and participial phrases, embedded questions, passive voice, past modals, and unreal past and present conditionals.
