  3. and …

  4. Along with NCSM webinar materials • http://www.mathedleadership.org/ccss/greattasks.html • What makes a great task?

  5. What is the difference between an equation and a function? • Functions – provide a means for describing and understanding relationships between variables. They can have multiple representations – in algebraic symbols, situations, graphs, verbal descriptions, tables, and so on – and they can be classified into different families with similar patterns of change. • Pg 27 Expressions, Equations and Functions

  6. What is the difference between an equation and a function? • Equations – state that two expressions are equivalent for certain values of the variables. While functions describe a relationship between varying quantities. • Pg 32 Expressions, Equations and Functions

  7. What is a task? What makes a great task? • Revolves around an interesting problem while offering several methods of solving • Requires examination and perseverance • Rich discourse for students • Builds student understanding • Summary • Pg 32 Expressions, Equations and Functions

  8. Guiding questions of a task • Evidence of the math practices • The task exposes student thinking • Teacher moves for next steps • NCSM webinar

  9. Postage Stamp Problem The post office only has stamps of the denominations 5¢ and 7¢. • What amounts of postage can you buy? What if the denominations are now 3¢ & 5¢? 15¢ and 18¢? What generalizations can you make for stamp denominations of m cents and n cents, where m and n are positive integers? • Fostering Algebraic Thinking

  10. In preparing for their upcoming T-shirt sale, students in the service club purchase 100 T-shirts that cost $5 each and then spent $2.50 on each T-shirt for silk-screen. The club members then decided to charge customers $15 a T-shirt. The club is hoping to make a large profit from selling this set of 100 T-shirts.
