  1. The Guilty • and • The Guillotine

  2. Guillotine • notably associated with the French Revolution • named after the Joseph Ignace Guillotin • "Madame Guillotine" was first used in 1792

  3. Though there is no linguistic connection between "guilt" and "guillotine," there certainly is a connection between guilt and death. • Ezekiel 18:4,20 • Romans 6:23 • Genesis 2:16, 17

  4. Examples of false guilt: • guilt by association • survivor's guilt • guilt manipulation • neurotic guilt

  5. Some people seem to think that religion is the culprit; stop believing in God and your guilt will melt away.

  6. If there is real guilt, who are the guilty ones? • The murderers.

  8. Kigali, Rwanda

  9. Jerusalem, Israel

  10. We stand by, wag our tongues and point our fingers with the attitude of the Pharisee, "I'm glad I’m not like other men."

  11. Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" • "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, `Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.

  12. Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" • "Again, anyone who says to his brother, `Raca, is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, `You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell."

  13. The angry yells of the crowd, "Crucify him; crucify him" should be turned against us because we have all been guilty of sin commensurate with murder.

  14. "guilt" (upodikon) • "describes the state of an accused person who cannot reply at the trial initiated against him because he has exhausted all possibilities of refuting the charge against him and averting the condemnation and its consequences which ineluctably follow." • (Kittel's Theological Dictionary)

  15. Genesis 42:21 • "[Joseph's brothers] said one to another, 'We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear therefore is this distress come upon us.'"

  16. We are guilty - the guillotine should be our fate, and there is no defense.
