  2. One of the key skills in achieving success in college is learning how to set goals. Studies have shown that students who have set academic goals for themselves are more likely to complete their college education. Goals can be short term (an “A” in Psychology) or long term (graduate with Highest Honors in your major). Defining your goals helps you structure your time so that you can focus on what’s important to you. What are Academic Goals?

  4. Advising is a very integral part of academics. The Advising Center is the centralized area that coordinates the advising activities, academic advisors and assigning students to their advisors. What is Academic Advising ?

  5. Your academic advisor is one of the most important people you will need at Miles College. Your academic advisor can help you choose the right courses, determine your interest, understand the College Catalog, help plan a schedule that works best for you, or locate tutoring and/or special assistance. Who is my Academic Advisor?

  6. Register for courses • Add/Drop a course • Discuss Class Progress or Problems in a Course • Locate tutorial assistance • Evaluate Degree Plan Reasons to visit your Academic Advisor

  8. Grade Point Average Your GPA is a general indicator of your academic performances. GPA’s can range from 0.00 to 4.00 Grades Point Average

  9. A GPA is based on two factors: The grade you receive in a course. Each letter grade has a corresponding numerical value: A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F or FA = 0 Grade Point Average

  10. STEP ONE Multiply the value of your grade by the number of semester hours the course is worth. This gives you the grade points earned for the course. How to calculate your GPA?

The College requires that you have a 2.0 GPA in order to graduate • Some majors have a GPA requirement to declare that major (i.e. Education and Social Work) • If your GPA falls below the minimum requirement for your classification, you are subject to academic probation and may be suspended. Why is your GPA important?

  15. Freshman: 0-29 Hours Minimum GPA 1.6 Sophomore: 30-59 Hours Minimum GPA 1.8 Junior: 60-89 Hours Minimum GPA 2.0 Senior: 90+ Hours Minimum GPA 2.0 Classification and GPA Requirements

  16. Academic Probation You are considered on academic probation the semester after your GPA falls below the minimum required for your classification. You are only allowed to register for a maximum of 12 hours during the semester that you are on probation. Academic Regulation

  17. Academic Suspension When you fail to meet the minimum GPA required for your classification after you have been placed on probation, you may be subject to academic suspension. During this time you are not allowed to enroll in classes at Miles (or any other college) for one semester. Academic Regulation
