Ready To Learn: Background • Cooperative agreement administered by the U.S. Department of Education • Promotes early learning and school readiness • Strives to reach low-income children • Currently in its fourth 5-year round • Supports activities to build media products, promote national programming distribution, and effectively conduct community-based outreach and research • Public Broadcasting awarded in 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010

  6. Our Mission To improve the math and literacy skills of young children ages 2-8, especially those from low-income backgrounds, through interactive, cross-platform content that supports the idea that “anytime is learning time” and helps prepare children for success in school.

The Electric Company Adventures on Prankster Planet • 2011 • Live action characters become animated superheroes! • 12 two-minute on-air segments ending in a cliffhanger connects to 12-level online immersive world. • Math words woven throughout experience through character dialogue, challenges, and mini games • 2012 • 8 new animations and levels • New graphing curriculum • Android and iOS tablet app (September)

TEC Expanded Learning Programs • After-school and Summer programs built on curriculum from The Electric Company’s Adventures On Prankster Planet • Extended Learning Program • 60 minute sessions • 2 days per week/18 week cycles • Summer Learning Program • 90 minutes sessions • 4 days per week/6 week cycles

WestEd Formative Summer Learning Study • The Electric Company Summer Learning Program • 16 Classrooms in school-based summer programs around the country • 152 Rising 2nd grade students • Consistently positive outcomes for students • Significant growth in knowledge of: • Mathematics vocabulary – 41% gain • Numeracy skills – 20% gain • Phonics skills – 17 % gain • Increased student morale and enthusiasm • New instructional strategies for teaching math and literacy • Contributions to student learning in math and literacy

PBS Parents Mobile App • Free bi-lingual mobile app for Android and iOSsmartphones • Targeted at parents of children ages birth to four • Provides parents with math and literacy tips via push notification texts, as well as location-based activities & mini-games to help get their children ready for school • Fun games that integrate math and literacy, build on kids’ natural curiosity, & encourage dialogue between parents & children • Launch to the public in November 2012

PBS Parents Mobile App • Partnership between the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative and the Campaign for Grade Level Reading • Parents can enter age of their child or children to receive age-appropriate texts and engage in developmentally-appropriate activities and mini-games • In addition to bi-lingual text, app will feature animation, voice-over (in Spanish and English), and sound effects • PBS is exploring partnerships for outreach and focus group testing of the app with low-income parents
