  1. Nevada National Security SiteNevada Field OfficeFY 2014 Status Report Jhon Carilli Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLW) Activity Lead DOECAP Workshop – Albuquerque, NM September 15-18, 2014

  2. Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) • Located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV • Approximately 1,360 square miles of U.S. DOE controlled land • Historic mission: Research and development of nuclear weapons • Clean-up controlled by Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order

  3. Nevada Field Office Missions • Defense Experimentation and Stockpile Stewardship • Global Security • Environmental Management The NNSS is the nation’s only site for high-explosive-driven subcritical plutonium experiments — essential for safe, effective stewardship of the enduring nuclear stockpile

  4. Nevada National Security SiteAssets • Device Assembly Facility • Big Explosives Experimental Facility • Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research • U1a Underground Experimental Complex • Nonproliferation Test and Evaluation Complex • Nuclear Criticality Experiments Research Center • Radiological/Nuclear Countermeasures Test and Evaluation Center • Radiological/Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction Incident Exercise Site

  5. Contractors • National Security Technologies, LLC (NSTec) • Remediation • Waste management • Laboratory data verification and validation • Navarro-Intera, LLC (N-I) • Corrective action investigations • Remediation • Groundwater modeling • Laboratory data verification and validation

  6. Industrial Sites Land and facilities used in direct support of nuclear testing • 1,970 sites listed • 12 sites remain • Less activity in FY 2015 with reduced samples and waste

  7. Soils Surface and shallow subsurface soil contaminated by atmospheric nuclear testing • 134 sites listed • 44 sites remain • Anticipate no change in volume of samples and waste for FY 2015

  8. Underground Test Areas Contaminated groundwater characterization and modeling • Five sites listed • One moving to closure • Two moving to model evaluation or closure • Two remain in investigative/data gathering • Implementing Integrated Sampling Plan between M&O and Environmental Restoration contractors • Anticipate more sampling in FY 2015

  9. Commercial Laboratory UseFY 2014 • Environmental: $500,000 • $140,000 NSTec • $360,000 N-I • NSTec Industrial Hygiene: $12,000 • NSTec Bioassay: $36,000
