  1. Mentor Superhero Heroes Selfless Day 4: Older Run Underdog Bell Ringer: Please get your computers and we will be working on edmodo.com today. While you are waiting for your computer to upload please draw a web similar to the one we used Tuesday to classify the heroes we will be viewing today. We will be watching 3minute clips and classifying the heroes in your web with these descriptors: Superheroes, Mentors, Underdog, and Selfless. Following clips we will discuss where you have put each hero.

  2. Movie Clips • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZfSAz1F0t8 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwltzypfxKU • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a11p5k6Zay4 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65sq5klbzrw

  3. Learning Goal and Essential Question • Lesson Goal: Students will be able to understand the relationship between individuals and heroes. • Essential Question: What are the different types of heroes? How do heroes relate to others?

  4. Visualizing • Today we are going to read about one type of hero that is different from the ones we’ve read about previously. Before you read we need to practice some of our reading strategies. Last week we worked on questioning and sharing our thoughts. Today we will work on visualizing. I am going to pre-read for you page 17. Try to picture in your mind what I read.

  5. Edmodo • Log on to edmodo.com. • Scroll down until you see Notes on Older Run. • Click on Turn in. • Open your assignment. • You may simply list your answers in “Type your response here” or copy and paste. • Make sure you follow each category.

  6. While reading • Today we will read pages 15-19. While reading students should write in their notes on edmodoany words that are unfamiliar and also track their questions, thoughts, and what they see as they read. • Following the reading we will discuss your notes, so be prepared.

  7. Class Discussion • How does Paulsen get into his “impossible” situation? • Why does Paulsen free his team? • Why do you think this story is included in an anthology (or grouping) about heroes?

  8. Exit Ticket • Poll on edmodo: Who do you think is the hero from what we’ve read so far? • Verbally in class: What type of hero is this?

  9. Homework • Take the list of words you wrote today, define them, and use each in a sentence about heroes. You need to do this with at least three words. • Example: • Maneuver-(v.) to manipulate, manage or move with skill. • The hero maneuvered around the villain’s traps and was able to rescue the helpless villagers.
