  2. Pentheus, son of Echion and Agave • Bacchus, son of Jove and Semele

  3. The Beginning • Tiresias warns Pentheus that if he disregards Bacchus, he will be torn into pieces. He completely ignores the prophecy. • Pentheus tries to rally his people to defend their city against Bacchus. • Pentheus sends his slaves to fetch Bacchus and they bring back one of his companions, Acoetes, a ship captain.

  4. The Middle • Acoetes’ story: His men found Bacchus in the wilderness and told him they would take him to his home, Naxos. His men did not, however, take Bacchus to Naxos, and Bacchus turned them all into sea creatures; all except Acoetes, who sailed him to Naxos. • Pentheus throws Acoetes in jail, but he escapes, and Pentheus goes to the the mountain to fight Bacchus.

  5. The End • Bacchus turns Pentheus into a wild boar, and his mother and her sisters charge him and rip him into pieces.
