  2. What is Parathion? Parathion is a synthesized organophosphate compound used as an insecticide. Was mainly used on alfalfa, barley, canola, corn, cotton, sorghum, soybean, sunflower, and wheat crops. It was first developed in the 1940’s by Gerhard Schrader of I.G. Farben, a German chemical industry conglomerate. (Also a maker of Zyklon B, which was used to gas jews in the holocaust)

  3. Direct/ Indirect Uses Other than as an Insecticide there are no other uses. Paraoxon a metabolite of Parathion was used as a Assassination weapon by the Apartheid-era South African Chemical Weapons program “Project Coast” Paraoxon was also used a a drug against glaucoma.

  4. Making and Using Parathion Benefits Risks Highly Toxic to humans Is a Carcinogen (Causes Cancer) Highly toxic to non-target organisms ( Other insects, birds, bees, fish, aquatic invertebrates. Targets the same protein as nerve agents (Practically a nerve agent in high doses) Parathion oxidizes to make Paraoxon which is 10 x more toxic. • Kills everything else too • It kills the target insects

  5. Alternatives to Parathion Can be replaced with non-chemical controls along with less toxic and persistent chemicals likes Pyrethroids.
