  6. Tier 1: General (cont’d) UK experience: • 5 points if studied in the UK at degree level or higher in last five years or if • worked in the UK over last twelve months and earned enough to gain 5 points for salary

  7. English Language Requirement • From native English speaking country • Various English language qualifications • Bachelor’s degree or above, taught in English

Differences between HSMP and Tier 1: General • New maintenance requirement • If single, £800 on account at all times over last 3 months • If dependants: • £533 for each dependant if main applicant here for over 12 months • £1600 if here for less than 12 months • Age allowance satisfied by passport • English language requirement

Tier 1 General Scheme Documentary requirements • Academic Qualifications • Degree Certificate or, If not yet graduated, letter from University plus academic transcript • Age Allowance • Passport • Salary If employed • payslips or letter from employer • bank statements If self-employed • Profit and loss account drawn up by accountant • Letter from accountant confirming net earnings • Dividend Vouchers

Tier 1 General Scheme (cont’d) • Previous UK experience (study or work) • for work as per salary • for study letter from University • English Language requirement • passport • degree certificate • recognised English Language Certificate • Maintenance Requirement • bank statements for last three months • letter from bank • NB Internet statements ok if accompanied by letter from bank confirming authenticity or stamped by bank

Other features of Tier 1 - General • Turnaround time is currently four weeks by post or same-day service for an extra £200 • No formal way of expediting applications • Initially granted for three years and then extended to five years • Settlement after five years • Can combine time spent on work permit/Tier 2 and Tier 1 General but NOT Post-Study Visa • One stage process • Fee £820 plus £50 for each dependant

  12. Work Permits on Tier 2 • must find employer who is licensed • advertisement/resident labour market test • employer involvement • up to 5 years • settlement after 5 years • can bring family • can switch if graduate student, otherwise entry clearance

Post-Study Visa • must have graduated from UK institution of higher or further education • intention to work • no recourse to public funds • intention to leave UK at end of two years • if sponsored, must obtain permission to sponsor • Replaced old IGS scheme • Bachelor’s Degree or above in any subject

  14. Post-Study Visa • can switch in-country • If applying from abroad: • entry clearance is required • not more than 1 year after graduation • can switch at end of two years to other work categories • can bring family

Documentary Requirements for Post-Study Work Visa • Passport • Degree Certificate if graduated • Letter from University on letter-headed paper confirming: • Date of award (NOT date of graduation) • Course studied and degree awarded • Dates of study • That study was full-time • Maintenance requirement as per Tier 1 Highly Skilled
